Client Background
Our client Mr Singh was in the process of purchasing a commercial property in Woking to establish his new restaurant. As the property had previously housed another restaurant, Mr Singh had concerns about the condition of the drainage system. Due to the potential for clogged drains due to fat and grease build-ups, it was vital to ensure that the drains were in good condition before purchasing the property.
Grease and fat that is not properly disposed of can wreak havoc on a restaurant’s pipes and food waste can end up clogging up the U-bend. It is recommended that restaurants receive regular inspections and CCTV drain surveys to keep on top of drain maintenance and cut down on future problems.
What we did
Effective drainage solutions are vital for restaurants and issues can be costly to repair. To prevent this, we conducted a full CCTV drain survey of the property before Mr Singh finalised his purchase.
After an initial assessment, we inserted the crawler camera into the pipes. A crawler is a remote-controlled device with 4 wheels that is operated by an engineer. The camera is placed on top, allowing it to wheel through the pipes with ease.
An engineer was able to navigate the camera through the pipes, paying particular attention to corners and joints where problems tend to build up. A live feed of the pipes is used by engineers to spot any problems in real time.
Findings
During the CCTV drain survey, we identified mild fat and grease buildup at the initial part of the pipes. We promptly flushed these areas, leaving the pipes clear. However, further down the drainage system, we discovered a significant ‘fatberg’. This fatberg was caused by a buildup of cooking grease that had congealed in the cold weather. Additionally, items such as tissue and dishcloths had adhered to the grease, making the fatberg larger and more problematic.
We provided Mr Singh with a detailed report of our findings, including video footage of the fatberg. We recommended immediate removal of the fatberg and grease build-ups to prevent future complications.
Once this had been completed and all traces of the fatberg removed, Mr Singh felt comfortable to move forward with the purchase.
Client Feedback
Our CCTV drain survey gave Mr Singh the peace of mind that there would be no significant drainage problems after his purchase, and he was thrilled with the results of the survey and unblocking services. Purchasing a new restaurant is a very stressful time and we were able to remove one weight from Mr Singh’s shoulders.
Fat and grease buildup in your drains can go undetected for years, posing a significant risk to your drains and sewers and potentially costing you thousands to repair. Our CCTV drain surveys can help you spot problems before they arise.
