Case Study 1 – Jim’s Gym
Jim Spencer reached out to us for a CCTV drain survey at his fitness business owing to an unknown drainage problem. Here is what happened, and how we got it sorted for him.
Jim has been operating a popular fitness centre and boxing club, on the outskirts of Guildford. Having many customers and a busy gym meant that there were plenty of local people hanging out there. But, Jim was noticing a strange problem for the last few weeks. Water was pooling around the shower and, on busy days, around the bathroom sinks.
At first, Jim thought it was a one-off situation that was stubbornly persisting or perhaps someone was blocking the drains with soap, hair caso. But as days went by, the issue escalated. The water was not pooling at the moment but was slow to drain and sometimes overflowed making it slippery.
Things worsened during the peak hours of the gym when the showers and sinks were continuously in use. Jim was becoming annoyed after one Monday morning when he went into the gym and found the main changing rooms flooded.
Jim decided to call a local plumber to get rid of the blockage, now he knew it wasn’t a quick fix. After a couple hours of inspections, the plumber couldn’t find the exact cause, but thought there might be blockage somewhere deep in the drains. To avoid further damage or overspending repairs, the plumber told Jim to get in touch with a drain specialist who would check the drainage system more thoroughly.
Jim got a recommendation to your drain experts because we did CCTV drain surveys. A technician from Your Drain Experts visited Jim’s premises within one day of his phone call. Rob, our technician quickly set up the CCTV camera technology to determine the cause of the drainage issues immediately.
The technician fed a small camera through the gym’s drainage system. Since the camera was high definition, the technician was able to see what was going on inside the pipes without digging up the gym. As the camera goes further into the pipes, Jim and the others are watching the live feed on the technician’s monitor.
It didn’t take long for Rob to spot the problem. About 15 metres into the system, wet wipes, hair and soap scum were blocking the pipe and creating a solid object that was restricting water. Jim didn’t expect it to be that big of a blockage. The plumber said this happens frequently at gyms due to the constant use of the showers and sinks. Things like wet wipes are a big problem because they don’t break down as well as toilet paper. The blockage probably started forming even before Jim opened his business one year ago.
The drain blockage has been identified. Your Drain Experts Rob recommended performing a high-pressure water jetting service. The technician also suggested a chemical treatment to break down any remaining debris that may cause any further blockages. It took only a few hours for Jim to access the drain and clear it.
Jim’s gym staff were back in business again the next day as the showers and basins had resumed working. Jim liked how quickly and professionally the service responded. After all, the gym only had to shut down for one day to sort the issue out.
To avoid this happening again, Rob the technician gave Jim some tips on how to keep a good drainage system. They suggested putting up signs in the employee and customer restrooms asking users not to put wet wipes or any other non-flushable items down the toilet. Also, schedule a CCTV drain survey every 18 months to keep a check on drain for the development of issues.
When I think back at my experience Jim said I was really amazed at how quickly and efficiently Your Drain Experts worked From the time, I made the call they knew what had to be done. Rephrase this (20 words):
A CCTV drain survey could help you save a lot of money and time as no digging would be required. We have listened to what Rob has said, so this doesn’t happen again and I will certainly be booking them in for a maintenance visit from this point forward.”
